Retirement is the opportunity to enjoy your life, relax and do the things you wished you had time for, when you were working. Now you can get off the treadmill and take leisurely walks instead.
Look back on all those years of stress at work when you could only dream of tossing it all and go have fun at the beach. Now you can reap the rewards of all that hard work.
It's surprising, perhaps, to realize that the feelings you have about retirement aren't all good. It's scary to have large blocks of time to yourself when you are used to having a boss and a list of things to do. It will take awhile to adjust, but in a few months, you will find yourself relaxing and enjoying yourself.
It's a big change to move from working to retirement. All of a sudden, you have more control over your time. And while that change is welcome, it can be a little scary, too. In order to enjoy your time, there are several ideas you may want to consider.
1. Why don't you start a hobby that you've always wanted to try? Maybe an artist is hidden inside of you - start now and take lessons. Take a look at jewelry making or cooking.
2. Work on the skills you already possess. If you are a talented singer, dancer, or whatever, retirement allows you the time and freedom to do what you love.
3. There are lots of people and animals who need time and attention--and you can help in so many ways, from reading to children at a local library to walking dogs at the animal shelter, from visiting lonely people at a nursing home to serving food at a homeless shelter. You might discover new talents in yourself by volunteering.
4. Retirement is a great time to get back in contact with old friends. Now that work and children are no longer getting in your way, you can take the time to locate people you haven't talked to in years, and reminisce about the past.
5. There are many travel opportunities for retired people, from Senior-Citizen discounts on hotels to tours designed specifically for retired people to teach you new skills and ideas. Find out what's out there and begin to enjoy it!
