Another thing to consider is what amenities you would like. Amenities can include having an elevator in a multi-floor apartment building, or a doorman. Other amenities you can consider are the availability of a pool and/or gym, and a security system.
Once you have narrowed down your search to just a couple of apartments, it is a good idea to drive by it at different times of day just to check out the traffic patterns. For instance, in the morning there may be very little traffic, whereas in the evenings it could be a race to get to the parking lot. Other things to find out once you have narrowed down your search would be whether or not you have a parking space with your apartment and if it is well-marked, what utilities are included, the crime rate, the proximity of the apartment to your work or school and other places you like to go to. Saving money on a cheap apartment that you like is defeated when you have to drive clear across town to get to work or school.
Looking for an apartment, especially your first one, can be a very fun and exhilarating experience. However, knowing what you want can save you a lot of time and decrease the amount of stress you will have. And once you have decided on a couple that you like, you need to make sure and ask questions so that you will know what you are getting.
